Category: Hear No Evil - See No Evil
Hello all,
I'm a member of the deaf-blind community, though I regret not joining sooner, for I could have found fruitful resources rather than run into many hurtles by just being a part of the blind community alone.
I have a best friend who is my support service provider, and together we went to the annual deaf-blind picnic in September here in Oregon, and I also got to attend an open house on Helen's birthday.
Enough with the introductions: I've been wondering if I could find a deaf-blind mentor or find someone who has had experience going to a college, university, etc, when they could not hear when it was safe to cross streets, hear lectures, etc, and what accommodations worked for them? I'm currently a client of the Oregon Commission for the Blind, but their primary focus is on blind people, so their knowledge about deaf-blindness may be limited.
Also, I have run into some bad experiences with the National Federation for the Blind because they wouldn't let me apply for an SSP whilst at one of their camps, saying that such things were to be frowned upon.
Other than that I enjoy life, and I often get busy for days and days LOL!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! O:-)
holy shit. they said that? but your SSP is your link to the outside world! without the SSP, you'd be lost.
I agree with that, but like they say, that just about scarred me emotionally.
